In Sicily, the religious rites of the Holy Week are historically very important for its population. It represents the week during which we celebrate the last days of Jesus, his passion, death, and resurrection. The Easter week always falls between late March and April and coincides with the new moon of spring. The Sicilian Easter has a strong appeal, both because we are already in spring when we start enjoying the sea and beautiful sunny days, especially for foreign guests, and because it recalls ancient historical and religious traditions. This year 's Easter week begins 14 on April with the Palm Sunday, already 20 days after the arrival of spring. Each town or city has its special Easter celebrations, with many popular and fascinating events.
Taormina
The city is preparing for Easter with all its typical traditions. All churches will perform various religious functions during the entire week. On Holy Thursday there will be the visit of the sepulchres, and on Friday afternoon at dusk begins the procession of the Via Crucis with the dead Christ and the Madonna Addolorata which, together with the confraternities starting from their churches, come together and form a long procession that runs through Corso Umberto in a truly moving atmosphere (See photo).
Many tourists choose Taormina at Easter for their holiday because they can already taste the early summer sun, the sea and culture. Hotels are all open and offer their best discounted spring rates. Also restaurants, pizzerias and bakeries prepare themselves for Easter, by offering dishes and desserts typical of this period.
